North America Nebula
  • North America Nebula

The North American Nebula, also known as NGC 7000, is a massive and visually striking emission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus, which is part of our Milky Way galaxy. This nebula is named for its resemblance to the continent of North America, with a prominent Gulf of Mexico-like dark region and a prominent "Pelican Nebula" feature that adds to the resemblance. The North American Nebula is a vast cloud of hydrogen gas and dust that spans an area of the sky roughly four times the size of the full moon. It is illuminated by the ultraviolet radiation from nearby young, hot stars, causing the gas to glow with a characteristic reddish hue.

Within the North American Nebula, new stars are actively forming from the surrounding gas and dust. It's a stellar nursery, where these young stars are born, and their formation and evolution are closely tied to the complex interplay of gravity, radiation pressure, and the dynamics of the surrounding nebula.
